The winter started in mid-December with some fairly mild weather and temperatures.
But, just before Christmas everything turned very cold…

今年の冬は、かなりおだやかな天候と気温とともに12月の中頃始まりました。
しかし,クリスマスの直前に全てが大変な寒さに変わってしました。。。

Most of us handle the cold just fine….until it snows and the wind picks　up.

こちらの人間は大体寒さに上手に対応できるのです・・・・雪が降り始めて風が強くなるまでは。

When the visibility gets difficult, school is closed. However, even with　very cold temperatures, schools are open every day.
The other thing that is maybe difficult for the Japanese to understand is　the term, “wind chill”.
The is the actual temperature as it really feels when you combine the　temperature with the wind velocity.
On Monday this week, the wind chill temperature was -57 degrees F. or -45　degrees C. Very cold!

こちらでは視界が悪くなると（天候の為に）、学校はお休みになります。　しかし、気温が低くなっただけでは毎日学校へ行かなくてはなりません。
日本の皆様には分かりにくい言葉かもしれませんが ”wind chill” という言葉があります。
これは、気温に風速を加味して感じた時の実際の気温です。（体感温度のことです。）
今週の月曜日、この体感温度は華氏でマイナス57度、もしくは摂氏でマイナス45度という感じでした。本当に寒い！

I remember once when my father was Governor, the entire State of ND recorded　wind chill temperatures at -56 degrees C for 3 straight days.
Because of this he issued an “Executive Order” to all schools in ND that　they must close due to the extreme cold temperatures and danger to children.

Finally, to date our snowfall has been slightly below normal for this　winter.

私の父がまだ州知事だった頃、ノースダコタ州全域で体感温度マイナス56度が3日間続いた記録があります。
この寒さの為に、父は極端に低すぎる気温が子供達に危険であるとしてノースダコタ州の全ての学校を休校にするという州知事令を発令しました。
最後にお伝えしますが、それでも今日までのこの冬の降雪量は平年より若干少なめなのです。
