“How can you live through those winters?”
is a common question we North Dakota natives often hear from our long
distance friends and family. North Dakota winters have a terrible reputation
for good reason with the cold temperatures, high winds and large amounts of
snow fall but most of us have no trouble finding the beauty of the season.
The winter climate is the complete opposite of what we experience during our
summer and crop growing months so we find ourselves fortunate to experience
the variety of all seasons.

「どうやってそんなに寒い冬を乗り切るの？」
私達ノースダコタの住人が、遠くにいる友人や家族から良く聞かれる質問です。
ノースダコタの冬は、気温が低く強風に大雪だという理由から最悪だと思われているようですが、冬ならではの美しさを見つけることも出来るので、実は私達にとっては何の問題もないのです。また、冬の気候は夏の間や収穫の季節とはまったく正反対なので、私達は変化に富んだいろいろな季節を経験出来る事を幸運だと思っています。

Yes, we have our harsh cold moments but we
adapt, bundle up and dress ourselves and our children appropriately to bear
the cold temperatures. We often find ourselves greeting our neighbors and
friends by recognizing their outerwear and not their smile because we are
covered from head to toe. If the season tends to get too long and cold then
many find this a perfect time to schedule a vacation!

ええ、確かに寒さのとても厳しい時もあります。でもそんな時は、自分も沢山洋服を着込んで、子供たちもぐるぐる巻きに着こませて寒い時をしのぐのです。そんなわけで、頭の先から足の先まで着込んでいるので、ご近所さんと挨拶を交わす時は、笑顔ではなくて着ている洋服で誰なのか判断してしまうこともよくあります。
もし寒さがあまりに長く続く時は、みんな、これはバケーションの予定を立てるのに絶好のチャンスだ！と思うのです。

This winter we have experienced some very cold stretches but we have also been very fortunate to have had many mild days where we can enjoy some of our popular winter outdoor activities such as snow skiing, snowmobiling, ice hockey, ice fishing, ice skating.

今年の冬は、非常に寒くて冷える時期が何回あったのですが、幸運な事にとても穏やかな日も多くありました。そんな時は、ウィンターシーズンに人気のアウトドアスポーツ、スキー、スノーモービリング、アイス・ホッケー、氷穴からする魚釣り、アイススケートなどを楽しみます。
